Who owns student work?

A week ago I was asked to talk with a group of educators in northern California at the Krause Center for Innovation and the program: Making Education Relevant and Interactive through Technology (MERIT) with Rushton Hurley. The focus of my talk was the ownership of student work and how we can design an assessment system that has students take more control of their work, rather than feeling like it just comes from a teacher.

  1. Great preso, Kern. I followed the links to your student showcase site, and eventually watched the "Meat Presentation" which was in Prezi, number 7 of 15 from the link "Project Navigation." Where can I find info about the students who did that report, and leave them comments / feedback. Also I'd like to be able to embed that Prezi to share with others but I'm not sure how to do it. This was a GREAT presentation. I hadn't heard of the documentary "King Corn" previously. Very thought provoking. Thanks for sharing and kudos to these students.

  2. Hey Wes,
Thanks, wow you really dug into the projects! I'll send along the link to the students portfolio where you can leave a comment and find the embed code.

  3. I am fascinated by how you use google apps in such an integrated way across your district Kern.

It was hard to tell from your presentation slides alone, but that seems to be describing how you have given students relevant organisational tools which allow them to work efficiently, creating a workflow that they have ownership of.

What about ownership of the original tasks or assignments themselves? Does the work set still come from the teacher or do the students have ownership of the tasks by developing them themselves or following their own lines of inquiry?

  4. Hi Oliver,
Yes, the initial use is for students to have the tools to create a workflow that works for them. The one in the presentation is kind of generic and shows a possible track from teacher assignment to student publishing. I have examples of students coming up with their own assignments, most of which can be found here: www.studentshowcase.org or here: www.itsvms.com
